March- Womens' History Month

Women are God’s gift to creation! Women have been the familial source of domestic comfort, nurture and tranquility for humankind. People in this country have traditionally looked to the First Lady of the nation as a model and representative of women. Certainly, the current First Lady, Mrs. Michelle R. Obama has carried this mantle well and presented an impressive image as a woman of color in general and as a woman of African-American descent in particular. This has been an event of historic proportion that we are privileged to witness in our lifetime that is yet unfolding during our lifetime.

This month we celebrate the tremendous gifts and talents that women of all nationalities, cultures and ethnicities have contributed in the development and enhancement of humankind and civilization around the world. The earliest biblical account of the origins of creation in Genesis teaches the unity and mutual responsibility of Adam and Eve to exercise good stewardship of the world that God Created. See Genesis 1:27-28. Adam and Eve were equal partners with a bond of both bone and blood. Women were never to be second class citizen of creation if we accept God’s Command for the two to be in charge of God’s Creation, not as owners but as managers. Further evidence for this assertion is found in the use of the Hebrew word that describes Eve as a “helper,’ which seems to make her subservient to Adam until we learn that in another text God Is also known as Helper.

The stories of the contributions by women are woven into the fabric of the biblical events without special emphasis. This results all too often in the special impact by women are taken for granted and devalued. For example, if Mrs. Moses had not interceded in the circumcision of their son, Moses was about to be visited by an angel of death. Her actions saved his life and the resulted in the liberation of a people held in slavery. See Exodus 4:24-26. But how often, if ever, have we heard of this event and when are Mrs. Moses praised and lauded for her wisdom and swift actions? We know that Joshua fought the battle of Jericho but it was a woman that was used to make the victory possible.

The biology of human beings vividly illustrate the interdependence of men to women and women to men. Both are needed to continue the cycle of reproduction. When God Sent God’s Seed (Son) in human form God Used a woman to birth The Christ as an infant. God Almighty Honored the unique status of ability of a woman and her partnership in God’s Work of Salvation. Dare we fail to do the same? Thank God for Mary, the blessed mother of The Infant Christ. We also thank God for our wives, mothers, sisters, aunts and all the women whom God Places in our lives to grace and nurture us. We can never repay the debt of love that we owe to the women who unselfishly gave and give of themselves to enrich our lives.

Christian married men have the awesome privilege of “loving our wives as The Christ Loved The Church” and sacrificed his life for Her. May we celebrate and covet God’s Gift to the universe in the person of women!
